Simple - it's the Scots name for a woodpigeon.
Here, Ian Sandison and John Barron have a laugh about the things John's dad used to shoot as vermin!
Ian Sandison: Mercy me, seven cushies! Noo folk disnae ken fit a cushie is!
John Barron: Aye, aye.
IS: A good old woodpigeon! [JB laughs] a Cushie-doo!
JB: Aye, if ye kent ma father like, that he wis shootin’ linnets… oooh!
IS: Linnets! I mean! Mercy me! [JB: And blackbirds!] Ye’d get the jile for that noo!
JB: One lapwing! [IS: Yes!] He didna get onything for the lapwing. Didna mention’t onywye. But eh,… aye, if it’s there, and he wis daein it, it wis legal!
IS: It must’ve been legal, yes! Aye, there was no protection o birds in those days, obviously no.
JB: ‘Is is fit we blame the Italians and the Spaniards for the day, like…
IS: Absolutely! An’ oor forefathers wis daein the same thing!
JB: Yup, aye!
